Name of Business:
Q: What inspired you to start your business ‘Coconut Baby’?
A: Even though I have Degrees in Art, Advertising, Communication Design and Marketing, I have always loved cooking. In 2005 I decided to go back school to get my degree in Culinary Arts. While living in NYC, and after graduating from The Art Institutes of New York, I started a small catering company out of my home that focused on upscale versions of classic Caribbean dishes and desserts.
Q: What was your biggest set-back when starting the business and how did you overcome it?
A: When I moved to Barbados, no one really knew me. As we know, Bajans do business with people they know and like so I used my social media channels and networking opportunities to let people get to know about my brand and me.
Q: Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give yourself when you were launching Coconut Baby?
A: Save money and research more!
Q: What steps did you take to transform your vision in to a reality?
A: Networking, partnering with other local entrepreneurs, listening to blogs, taking business improvement courses and lots of reading.
Q: Now that you’ve started Coconut Baby, what is the next major goal you want to achieve?
A: The launch of my new business Plant Lyfe!
Q: How is TEN Habitat helping you achieve your business goals?
A: TEN Habitat has opened up my thinking as to what is possible in my business. The sky is just the beginning...
Q: How did the community of TEN Habitat influence the development of your vision?
A: I honestly could not have won the Pitch Pit competition without being a part of TEN. All of the aspects of my pitch that impressed the judges, happened because TEN made me improve my concept. Proving to facilitators at TEN that the idea was viable is what provided the information for my pitch.
Q: Tell us a little about your experience within the TEN community and why you think other entrepreneurs should be part of this community.
A: TEN provides a safe environment to share your ideas with folks who are also in the entrepreneurship struggle. Their experience provides not only a sounding board, but real world solutions that you might have missed.
Q: What’s the best career advice you have ever received?
A: Thoughts become things. Fix your thoughts.
Q: What motivates you to keep going every day?
A: I love what I do and when you love what you do, the money eventually follows; it’s that simple.
Q: What’s your favourite Vegan dessert?
A: Right now, my vegan cheesecake. Surprises me every time, even though I make it!
Q: Are you a night owl or an early bird?
A: Both… I’m usually in a perpetual state of cheerful tiredness.
Q: What do you love most about Brooklyn?
A: Everything. Thinking about Brooklyn makes me smile very broad.
Q: What do you love most about Barbados?
A: Barbados speaks to my soul. As much as I love Brooklyn, I have always loved Barbados more.
Thank you Allison!
